What is this system

Savage Worlds is a universal tabletop RPG from Pinnacle Entertainment Group (Adventure Edition, 2018). Step-dice system: Wild Cards roll their trait die + a Wild Die d6, keeping the higher. Dice explode (Ace) on their max. Target is 4; beating by +4+ gives a Raise. Initiative via playing cards. Bennies are metagame currency for rerolls. Settings include Deadlands, Rifts, Pathfinder — all on one engine.

Setting

Genre-agnostic. Savage Worlds builds worlds through Setting Rules and modular Edges/Hindrances. Official settings: Deadlands (horror-western), Rifts (dimensional chaos), Pathfinder (fantasy), Necessary Evil (supervillains), 50 Fathoms (swashbuckling fantasy).

What it looks like at the table
The cowboy rolls d8 (Shooting) + Wild Die d6. Ace on d8: 8+6+4 = 18! Two Raises! The bullet tears through the bandit. Bennies sit on the table — waiting for the next turn. Initiative cards spread: Ace goes first. Welcome to the Weird West.

Key mechanics

Step-Dice (d4–d12)

Each trait runs from d4 to d12. Roll trait + Wild Die d6, keep higher. Dice explode (Ace) on max. Simple but dramatic math.

Wild Cards & Extras

Players are Wild Cards (3 Wounds to incapacitate). Enemies are Extras (up, down, or off the table). Simple escalation: from loners to armies.

Bennies

Metagame currency: reroll a failure, soak damage, get a Raise. Earned through roleplay or GM generosity.

Initiative Deck

Standard poker deck determines turn order. Ace goes first. Joker = +2 to everything and go whenever you want.
