What is this system

Pathfinder Second Edition is a tactical tabletop RPG from Paizo, released in 2019 and refreshed through the Remaster Project (2023–2024). A d20 system with a 3-action economy, 16+ classes, dozens of ancestries and archetypes, and hundreds of spells. The full SRD is free on Archives of Nethys. Born from love of D&D 3.5, it became a giant in its own right.

Setting

Golarion — a world where high fantasy sits alongside pirate kingdoms, undead realms, steampunk, and mythic planes. Each continent is its own genre: from Arcadia to the Mwangi Expanse to the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. Other planes and stars are reachable through Planescape-like portals.

What it looks like at the table
Three actions. The barbarian spends one to Rage, one to Strike with his axe, one to Regain Stamina. The cleric burns two on Heal, one to raise a shield. The enemy — an fire elemental — attacks with a reaction. Combat is fast, but every roll carries weight: +10 to the result means a critical hit.

Key mechanics

3-Action Economy

Every turn is exactly three actions. Stride, Strike, cast — each costs one. No half-actions, no configurations. Simple and elegant.

Four Degrees of Success

Critical failure → failure → success → critical success. A 10+ difference in the result changes everything. Every +1 matters.

Deep Customization

Every class with subclasses, heritages, archetypes, feats at every level. Your barbarian can become a caster through multiclassing, your rogue can become a paladin.

Balanced Math

Character level adds to all checks. An enemy 5 levels higher is nearly invulnerable. Encounter-building math is among the best in the industry.

What people say
Second Edition refines Pathfinder's tactical combat without losing the complexity that makes it so much fun at the table.— Charlie Hall, Polygon
I love this system. The mechanics of 2nd edition Pathfinder are a mix of 3.5, Pathfinder, and 4th edition and 5th edition DnD. All the best being blended together.— Edward Kabara, RPGnet
