What is this system

Monsterhearts 2 is a Powered by the Apocalypse RPG about the messy, dangerous lives of teenage monsters. Vampires, werewolves, witches, and ghosts attend an ordinary high school, hiding a monstrous nature beneath adolescent drama. It's a game about desire, power, growing up, and queer identity — where your body changes without permission and the real horror grows out of the relationships between characters, not the monsters themselves.

Setting

A small American town and its high school. By day: classes, parties, gossip, and broken hearts; underneath it all: hunger, wickedness, and secret power. Here monstrosity and puberty are indistinguishable — every character hides a dangerous nature, and any surge of feeling can turn catastrophic.

What it looks like at the table
You corner the quarterback by his locker and pour on the charm — Turn Someone On, 2d6 + Hot. The dice come up 8, a 7–9. He's flustered and into it, but you're the one left exposed, so he takes a String on you. Now he can pull that thread whenever he likes. You got what you wanted; it'll cost you later.

Key mechanics

2d6 moves (PbtA)

Every risky action triggers a move: roll 2d6 + a stat (Hot, Cold, Volatile, or Dark). 10+ succeeds, 7–9 succeeds with a cost, and 6 or under misses as the MC makes a hard move against you.

Strings

Strings are the game's social currency — emotional holds you gain over others. Spend one for a +1, to inflict harm, or to force a hard choice. Everyone ends up tangled in everyone else's threads.

The Sex Move

Each Skin carries a unique Sex Move that fires only after consensual intimacy with another significant character, turning the most vulnerable scenes into concrete mechanical consequences.

Skins & the Darkest Self

Play a Vampire, Werewolf, Ghost, Fae, Witch, and more. Each Skin brings its own moves and a Darkest Self — the monstrous spiral you fall into when everything goes wrong.

What people say
All told, Monsterhearts 2 is a real credit to designer/author Avery Alder.— Strange Assembly
It's very nicely done. Alder's art is atmospheric, reminiscent (to my untrained eye) of Tim Bradstreet.— James Davis Nicoll
