What is this system

A samurai drama with a unique custom dice system. Ring dice (d6) and skill dice (d12) use special symbols instead of numbers. The player chooses their approach to each check through one of five Rings — Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Void — each yielding a fundamentally different result. Character creation through 20 questions about background, clan, and motivation. The last question: 'How will your character die?'

Setting

Rokugan — fantasy Japan: samurai, clans, honor, duty. Seven Great Clans vie for power at the Imperial Court. The world draws from Japanese, Chinese, and Korean mythology.

What it looks like at the table
Crane clan council. You must convince the daimyo to support your plan. Persuasion roll through the Fire Ring — a passionate speech. Two successes, but a die shows the Strife symbol. Your voice trembles. Strife rises to 5 — you're on the edge. One more Strife and the mask cracks. The entire court sees your rage. For a samurai, that's worse than death.

Key mechanics

Ring system

5 Rings: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Void — the player chooses which Ring to approach the check through, each yields a different result.

Strife

Emotional tension builds on rolls. Overflow means 'unmasking' — losing control in public. In a society where honor = life, showing emotion = disgrace.

20 Questions

Character creation through 20 questions about background, clan, motivation. The last: 'How will your character die?'

Honor, Glory, Status

Three separate reputation tracks, each affecting different social situations.

What people say
This latest incarnation of Legend of the Five Rings is a shining example of how an RPG can commit so deeply to a setting and playstyle that it's impossible to imagine one existing without the other.— Richard Jansen-Parkes, Tabletop Gaming
Combining that with the elemental ring approach really sells me on the new edition of the L5R roleplaying game.— Strange Assembly
It teaches the system well, it gives a good introduction to the setting and society, and there are plenty of interesting encounters and chances for the players to shine.— Seamus Conneely, Cannibal Halfling Gaming
