What is this system

Fate Core is a universal tabletop RPG from Evil Hat Productions (2013), the latest version of the Fate system (refreshed in Fate Condensed, 2020). Uses 4dF (Fate dice: +, -, blank). Characters are built from Aspects (short phrases), Stunts, and Skills. Fate Points let you rewrite the story. Licensed CC BY 3.0 — rules are completely free.

Setting

Genre-agnostic. Fate doesn't tie to a world — it builds worlds from Aspects. Popular settings: Dresden Files (urban fantasy), Spirit of the Century (pulp 1920s), Fate of Cthulhu (horror), Interface Zero (cyberpunk), Atomic Robo (science-heroes).

What it looks like at the table
The hero bursts into the villain's lab. The Aspect 'Former CIA Operative' grants a bonus. Three 4dF dice: ++- = +1. Success! But the villain activates 'Heavy Security' — the Aspect shifts the situation. The hero spends a Fate Point, invokes 'I Know These Tricks', and rewrites reality.

Key mechanics

4dF (Fate Dice)

Four dice with +, -, blank. Sum from -4 to +4. Simple but deep math: every +1 changes the outcome.

Aspects

Short phrases describing a character, place, or situation. 'Former CIA Operative', 'Dark Alley'. Aspects are sources of bonuses and complications.

Fate Points

Currency for rewriting the story. Spend for +2 to a roll or to reshape the situation. Earned through villain Aspects and compels.

Four Actions

Four actions: Attack, Defend, Overcome, Create Advantage. Any situation is resolved with one of these four.

What people say
I think this game is today's standard-bearer for tabletop roleplaying, and why every game that's come out since can and should be compared to it.— Ed, Geek Native
Fate Core is an astoundingly well done product. Not only is it a well-produced book, but the system has been refined and distilled to be the best version of Fate so far.— Wil Hutton, RPGnet
