What is this system

A reimagining of the classic Swedish RPG 'Drakar och Demoner' (1982). A light, fast fantasy system: roll d20, get under your skill. Combat on initiative cards, magic with misfire risk, growth through failure. 'D&D, if the Swedes made it in 2023.'

Setting

Misgarth — bright fantasy with dark undertones. Dragons, knights, dungeons — but with a Nordic flavor. Ducklings (duck-folk), orc-like half-orcs, classic elves and dwarves. The starter box includes a ready region, map, and campaign.

What it looks like at the table
Initiative cards are dealt. You're a duck knight with sword and shield. Your card is 3, the goblin's is 7. You strike first! Swords roll: d20, need 13 or under. Rolled a 1 — critical success, a.k.a. 'Dragon'! Double damage. The goblin falls. But the mage tries a spell — failure, magic mishap. Roll on the table: his staff explodes. Mark a failure checkbox — the skill grows at session's end.

Key mechanics

Card initiative

Every round — a new order by cards. Tactics shift on the fly, combat never becomes routine.

Risky magic

Spells require a roll. Failure = magic mishap. The consequences can be worse than the enemy.

Growth through failure

Skills improve from failures. The more you fail, the faster you learn. Elegant.

Best starter set

Cards, miniatures, dice, adventure — all in the box. Sit down and play in 20 minutes.
