What is this system

At the Gates is Onyx Path's high fantasy game inspired by Japanese RPG video games, and the second line in the Earthbane Cycle. The seven nations of the continent of Everend kept a fragile peace for centuries, until one of them called forth daemons from the Void. Now all rush to gain the same power, while the heroes try to stop the war and save the world. The book came out in September 2026 in PDF and print on DriveThruRPG.

Setting

In the world of Gaia, magic is in everything, from fields of wheat to the people who sow them. Where the Void meets the world, Outlands grow: warped places holding gates that are literal tears in reality. Wildlife there turns into ravenous beasts, while common folk live in fear of war and of a power they cannot comprehend.

What it looks like at the table
The meadow by your village is black now, and a daemon is climbing out of a rift in it. Your Warrior steps in front of it while the Mage looks for a weak point in the spell. You build a pool of d10s and count every 8 or higher: there are enough successes to hold the thing back, but not to kill it. Now you must decide whether to finish it here or try to bargain.

Key mechanics

Storypath Ultra

You roll only when the outcome is uncertain and failure could turn the story. Pool of d10s, every 8 or higher a success. Heroes are competent, but the consequences are real.

Three Paths

A character is built from Heritage (where they grew up), Upbringing (the life they lived and the trades they know) and Profession. There are five Professions: Diviner, Harrier, Mage, Warlord and Warrior.

Arts and magic

A hero's special abilities come as Arts and magic. Magic is rooted in the living nature of the world: the elements, the mind, the body and the soul, while the Void stands outside it.

Daemons and monsters

The book covers antagonists from mundane people to daemons and explains how to make your own. Daemons aren't only for fighting: you can summon them and negotiate with them.
